The Doctor's Corner ... Spay and Neuter Procedures
Many animals reach sexual maturity (about 6 months of age) this time of year. If they are not spayed or neutered they will add to the 15 million unwanted pets that will be put to sleep this year alone. To do our part to keep the number of unwanted pets down, we will provide 15% off the cost of any full service spay or neuter performed during the month of October.

Other benefits of spaying and neutering are:

Altered pets are less likely to roam Altered pets are less aggressive Altered pets are less prone to getting certain cancers Altered pets have less urine odor (especially true of male cats) Altered pets are less prone to spray urine or to mark territory Altered pets do not generally get STDs Spay and Neuter Procedures Spaying (technically called ovariohysterectomy) is performed on females. An Ovariohysterectomy is a major surgery in which the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus are all removed.

Neutering (technically called orchidectomy) refers to the castration of a male. Orchidectomy is a surgical procedure in which both testicles are removed.

Answers to some common questions

Will my animal get fat?
No. Animals do have a slight drop in metabolism after these surgeries are performed. Reducing the amount you feed them by about 10% will usually keep them at a healthy weight and will help to pay for the procedure over time.

Should I allow my animal to go into heat or have a litter before she is spayed?
No. It is actually healthier for your pet to never experience a heat, as it lessens the animal’s chance of getting mammary cancer. Animals spayed after their first heat are seven times more likely to develop mammary cancer than animals spayed prior to their first heat.

These procedures are done under general anesthesia and pain relief medications, which provide comfort and reduce healing time. With the advances in anesthesia most patients arrive in the morning and go home in the afternoon.
