The Doctor's Corner ... Weight Management Program
Now that the holidays are over it’s time to concentrate on pets that have gained a few extra pounds. Pets that meet an ideal body design will live up to 25% longer than overweight pets. Every extra pound of weight has at least 2 miles of blood vessels, that means the heart has to work that much harder to maintain the body. The same is true for people as well. Set up an exercise plan you and your pet can follow through on. Here are some suggestions you may find helpful:

• Make Your Dog Your New Exercise Buddy:

Going for a walk or a jog with your best friend will not only be good for both of your bodies, it will also add enjoyment to both of your daily lives. Find the best time of the day to go for your walk or jog, and stick to it! If you are new to walking start with 10 minute walks each day, and slowly build each walk up to 30 minutes. You should walk fast enough to increase your heart rate and breathe more deeply, but be able to carry on a conversation. Although cats may not be the best jogging partners, there are many exercises that can be fun for the both of you. Having your cat chase a laser-pointer or a cat toy is always entertaining and helps to keep your cat in shape. The easiest feline exercise is to put your cat’s food at one end of the house and their water at the other.

• Don’t Overfeed Your Pets

Dogs should be fed 1 cup of food per 25 pounds of desired body weight. If you are not sure what the ideal weight for your pet is just stop in and we will let you know. The average cat should only eat 5/8th of a cup of food per day. If you add anything else such as canned food or treats you need to reduce the amount of dry food you are feeding by an equal amount.

If your pet is used to free choice feeding it will eat the prescribed amount over the day. For pets that eat at a designated “meal time” try feeding prescribed amount in several meals over the day to keep metabolism up.

We have multiple prescription diets designed to get the weight off and keep it off. An additional bonus to feeding your pet food from our hospital is that you will become a part of the Pet Food Club and begin saving 10% off the cost of your veterinary care and feeding costs. There is no cost to join the Pet Food Club. Call 503-684-3133 for further information.

“Thank you for your gentle care of our cat Kahn this week. Making the decision to bring him in was a tough one. I truly believe he knew what was happening and agreed with our decision. His purr was so rich that day.

He helped raise 5 dogs and was friends with all of them - he also raised 4 ferrets and was dear friends with 3 of them! He ate potato chip, donuts, and French bread. Noodles were a treat - not just a cat -  a family member.

Seventeen years is a rich life for our cat who started his life in a college dorm!

Thank you for your gentle care,
Pink Widdows”
